INTERVISTA CON PETER VAN DONGEN

I Soldi !

INTERVIEW WITH PETER VAN DONGEN- THE ENGLISH VERSION.

Today I present to you my interview with the author and illustrator of comics Peter van Dongen.
Peter is a very popular cartoonist in the Netherlands and has been translated into many languages.
His most important work (at the time still unpublished in Italy) is the diptych Rampokan, set towards the end of the Dutch colonial period.
I thank Peter for his kindness and for his availability.
While I wish you all a good read.
EnJoy

Nick:  Hello Peter , thank you for accepting this interview , I realize that it is strange to be interviewed by a blog of a country where you have not posted anything so thanks doubly : to begin would you like to introduce yourself to the readers of Nocturnia talking a little you and what inspired you to become a designer and illustrator?

Peter van Dongen:  I 'm Peter van Dongen, born in 1966, Amsterdam. Comic artist and illustrator as well. My debut was the comic Muizentheater in 1990 (Micetheatre), then my breakthrough with Rampokan: Java in 1998 and Rampokan: Celebes in 2004 (translated in French, German and Indonesia). In 2013 my latest comic Three Days in Rio was released for the English, Swedish and Dutch market. I made this comic especially in commission of GANT International, an American-Swedish well known fashion brand.

Nick:  Your style is clearly influenced by the " ligne clair " Hergé and your fellow Joost Swarte . Apart from the two of them who were the authors who have most influenced you and format ?

Peter :   Haha, let me tell you: I 'm not really influenced by Joost Swarte. Actually not at all! It is Hergé of course. And the other classic Belgian artists like Edgar P. Jacobs, Franquin and even Willy Vandersteen. In the 1980's I discovered Yves Chaland, but also Moebius and Hermann (storytelling!). And there are so many more to mention!

Nick:  In Italy we know very little about the Comics from the Netherlands and his state of health, can you tell us something about it?

Peter:  Hard to say. Nowhere days it is hard and difficult to get living of comics only. Only a few Dutch artists are able to manage that. That's why me and lots of colleges are making commercial work too for our living. The best years of Dutch comics were really 20 years ago. Most of the comic magazines are gone (Luckily EPPO made some years a comeback and is still there!), so it is hard to find your work publish in newspapers or other magazines. Our comic world is very small compering to France of course.

Nick:   Your most important work is the diptych " Rampokan " which addresses the issue of Dutch colonialism in Asia, why this choice and how your family background has influenced the choice of a topic shocking ?

Peter:  Yeah, in fact that's the reason. I grew up with these story's of my mother and grandmother of their homeland Indonesia and after my debut Muizentheater I thought there might be a new project into. In fact I was thinking about an experience of my mother when she was 9 years old, and she 'd to hide with her family underneath a bed for a bombing of the harbour city Makassar on the island Celebes in 1950. Done by the Dutch, she remembered. That gave me the inspiration and I realized I had no clue of her and my grandmothers personel history in Indonesia/the Dutch Indies. After all I found out it were not the Dutch but the Indonesian Marine who was bombing the city.

Nick:  I was struck by the character of Johan Knevel, a Dutch soldier who 's affection for his asian nurse goes the other way, what inspired the character?

Peter:  Johan Knevel is just an ordinary guy who is born in Indonesia during the colonial Dutch Rule. He don't know better then all the others then: as a white man you were the highest in ranking. The Indonesians itself were the lowest, even it was there own country. Johan believes he will return to Indonesia as a liberator but find out he isn 't welcome there anymore, because of the change of times after World War 2. He 's a tragic hero, he never had seen the true needs of the Indonesians. My inspiration of this character did I found by reading novels, diaries from Dutch soldiers or hearing interviews with theme etc.

Nick:   Precisely what was the contribution made by Swarte in " Rampokan Java" ?

Peter:  It was he 's idea to use a extra colour instead of only black and white. And he showed me how I had to work with that, with just one colour. But I did it all by myself. And in that time in 1998 he was the co-publisher of Oog & Blik, so he was responsible for the book design. But I made all the content, everything what you see the graphics, typography etc. all manual.

Nick:  That of colonialism has always been an uncomfortable topic for European countries often forgot  so is Italy . works as Rampokan serve to remind us Europeans a period where not to go too proud To what extent Rampokan was incorporated in the Netherlands ? helped to reopen the debate on the colonial period ?

Peter:  I can not say Rampokan has reopened a new debate on this matter. But what counts is the fact that my story had opened the eyes of all my readers, who were not really familiar with this history. Because it was (and still is!) a uncomfortable topic we haven't been well done educated at school. So I heard from some readers in personal that they never realized it was a real war what was happening there. The focus is as always on World War 2 in Europe/Holland, so it is hard for many people to get an image of the colonial war in Indonesia and if my book will helps a little it 's fine for me.

Nick:  We come to the technical aspect of your work : what kind of paper do you use? Do you prefer using a stylus or brush ? And what do you think of digital techniques ? And how long does it take on average to make a table?

Peter:  For Rampokan I used papers like Schoelershammers 250/300 gramms and now I 'm working with Canson Angouleme BD, 250 gramms. I work with a brush, Winsor &Newton Series  nr. 0 and 00 for inking. And yes, nowhere days I work too with a computer, only to do the colour work. I used to work with ecoline, gouache and airbrush, but with with Photoshop I save a lot of time and the result of my computer colouring is alright. Despite I think the manual way of working is still the REAL thing!

Nick:  There were special reasons for the choice of using two colors in Rampokan ?

Peter:  Money! My publisher Oog & Blik had in 1998 not enough money to finance a full colour comic. But after all I think the way I have done the duo tone colouring, it suits well with the story during the 1940's. A bit nostalgic. But especially for a Dutch comic magazine called MYX I had the opportunity to made a full coulor version of the first chapter of Rampokan: Celebes, published in 2004.

Nick:   Future plans : What are you working on , and especially if you know there is a release of " Rampokan " in Italian? In the past there was talk of an interest by a couple of publishers, including- I believe- the Coconino.

Peter:  I 'm working since a couple of years on an adaptation of a novel from famous Dutch writer Adriaan van Dis, so called Familieziek. Hopefully in about three years it wll be ready.
And my latest comic, released in August 2013, is Three Days in Rio, which I made in commission of fashion brand GANT International. A tale about fifteen-year-old Lennart who 's found a job as a steward on a cargo ship sailing from Stockholm to Rio de Janeiro during the 1950's. Except for the Dutch market it was also as an Swedish and English edition available at their GANT stores all over the world. As a gift to their best clients.
Yeah, I know there was serious interest from Coconino, but still it hasn 't been worked out yet. Perhaps I will see them in Angouleme next week. I hope so!

Africa-Holland Line

Nick:   Well, that's all. Thanking you for your time I ask you if there is some question you should talk about and I didn't make.

Peter:  Well, the last couple of years we are aware of the many fugitives from Africa to Europe, especially Italy/Lampedusa. Some years ago I was asked by Scheepvaartmuseum,  the  Maritime Museum Amsterdam the making an oil painting. I never used this technique before, but I accepted their proposal and worked for one year on this oil painting I show you here. It 's called Africa-Holland Line and is about these refugees. A triptych because I 'm still a comic artist, making stories with images. But it's my first oil painting and that's why I didn 't use any outline as I used to be with my comic work. An experiment and it is expose permanent on this national museum.

Così potrei vantarmi di un altra esclusiva. ^^
